Pacquiao vs. Rios Live Stream: What to Watch for During Anticipated Weigh-in

Boxing fans can hardly contain their excitement as the welterweight battle between Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao and Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios is quickly approaching, but before they go toe-to-toe in the ring on Saturday, they will cross paths at the weigh-in on Friday. On the surface, a weigh-in should be little more than both fighters stepping on the scale, but things are rarely that simple. At the very least, there is always some jawing back and forth, and that can often escalate to full-scale brawls if things get out of hand. Plenty of bad blood already exists between the Pacquiao and Rios camps, so observers should watch this one closely. Here is all the information you need to watch Friday’s weigh-in, as well as a primer for what you should keep an eye on during the action.

Will Sparks Fly?

Based on the interactions between Pacquiao and Rios leading up to the fight, it seemed as though there was little more than a friendly rivalry at work. That is no longer the case, however, as the fighters’ representatives got into a heated brawl at a Macau gym on Wednesday, according to Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports. As seen in this photo courtesy of Yahoo! Sports, Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach and Rios trainer Robert Garcia were in the middle of it all. Per Iole, the melee started when Garcia overstayed the gym time that was agreed upon by the two camps. This caused words to be exchanged, and it turned into an ugly scene as Garcia accused Roach of using racial slurs. Also, Roach said that Rios conditioning coach Alex Ariza made fun of his Parkinson’s disease, so it’s safe to say that both sides are waiting to explode. Pacquiao and Rios are fairly mild-mannered in their own right, but they may not be able to stop their respective camps from going at each other again. It won’t exactly be the classiest move if it does happen, but there is no question that it would help drive pay-per-view sales, if nothing else.

Rios Moving Up in Weight

All eyes will be on Roach and Garcia during the weigh-in, but it’s important to remember that the act of weighing in means something to Rios. This is a welterweight bout, and Rios has never fought at the weight before. He has largely been a light welterweight and a lightweight, but moving up should be a natural progression for him considering his size. What are you most interested in when it comes to the Pacquiao vs. Rios weigh-in? Physical confrontation Rios’ weigh-in Trash talk Submit Vote vote to see results Rios is 5’9″, whereas Pacquiao is just under 5’7″, so Rios has the frame necessary to pack on some more weight. With that said, it’s never easy to say how the extra weight will impact a fighter. It’s possible that he has put on either too much or too little weight, and that could have an effect on the fight. It will be interesting to see if Rios passes the eye test on Friday in terms of looking as good or better than Pacquiao from a physical standpoint. That is no easy task since Pac-Man is one of the most physically fit boxers in the sport, but Rios can potentially strike some fear in him if he shows up in the best shape of his career. We won’t know how the excess weight will factor in until the fight happens, as it could help Rios’ power but hurt his mobility. With that said, though, his weigh-in will be scrutinized if he doesn’t show up looking cut.

Trash Talk

The trash talk has already started between Roach and Garcia, but it’s possible that Pacquiao and Rios will use Friday’s forum to take some verbal shots at each other as well. Both men have been pretty tame over the past few months, but they haven’t been saints by any means. According to ESPN Boxing, Rios hasn’t been shy about telling the media that he intends to retire Pacquiao by defeating him.

Retirement is a hot-button issue for Pacquiao on the heels of losses to Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley, and he didn’t take kindly to Rios’ proclamation, according to Michelle Joy Phelps of BehindTheGloves.com.

Although Pacquiao and Rios have both been basic in terms of trash talk thus far, they might be inspired to turn it up a notch at the weigh-in. Even if they don’t necessarily dislike each other, bad blood between their camps may prompt them to turn up the heat a bit. Pacquiao isn’t a big talker, so Rios may have to rile him up, but there is definitely some potential for a war of words come Friday.

Pacquiao vs Rios Weigh-In: Watch Live Stream of Pre-Fight Event

Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios will meet for the final time today before the fists start flying in their big fight on Saturday night from Macau, China. The promotion had been pretty tame until the fighters arrived in China this week. On Wednesday, an ugly scrum broke out between members of both fighters camps, including head trainers Freddie Roach and Robert Garcia, over access to a gym. Both of those men, and their fighters, will be on stage tonight for the final weigh-in, and it’ll be interesting to see whether there will be some lingering fireworks from that scene during the fighter workouts.

Pacquiao enters the fight badly in need of a victory to resurrect his career. He’s suffered back-to-back losses, even though both fights were completely different. The scorecards in his defeat against Timothy Bradley were widely panned by boxing fans and media as not accurately reflecting the action in the ring. Most felt that Pacquiao did more than enough to win the fight by a wide margin, and the official result caused a firestorm of criticism. But then a single missile right hand from Juan Manuel Marquez silenced all talk of the Bradley affair and raised some serious questions about Pacquiao’s ability to continue competing at a top-level. Those are questions he hopes to answer on Saturday night. For Rios, the equation is much simpler. He’s in a virtual no-lose situation. If he wins, he gets the biggest win of his career on the biggest stage of his career. If he loses, but doesn’t get blown out, everyone expected it and he can recover.

But first, the combatants need to make weight, and that’s what they’ll aim to do today.

Pacquiao vs Rios – Live Streaming

Fighter of the Decade and our Pambansang Kamao Manny Pacquiao and former world champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios will fight in a 12-round welterweight rumble on Saturday, November 23 (Sunday morning, Manila time) from The Venetian Macao’s CotaiArena, in Macao, China.

Both Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios are hoping to get back on track after suffering from recent losses. Pacman’s controversial lost to Timothy Bradley last June may not be that big of a deal but when he was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez, the world starts to question if the eight-division world champ is about to take retirement soon. Rios, on the other hand, lost to Mike Alvarado via unanimous decision. Is he ready for Pacquiao this time?

Manny Pacquiao vs Brandon Rios happens Saturday, November 23, at the Venetian Hotel in Macau, China. Here’s some live streaming details. One of the highly-anticipated sports events of 2013, the Pacquiao vs Rios match will take place at the said resort hotel’s Cotai Arena. Rios versus Pacquiao is an HBO pay-per-view event but, just like other major boxing matches, its slightly delayed ad-sponsored broadcast or video replay will also be offered on some television stations and cable channels. To watch the live video of Pacquiao vs Rios in the Philippines on Sunday morning, one has to pay for cable subscription or go to restaurants, bars, theaters/movie houses, covered courts, gyms, and establishments in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao and other cities and municipalities as well as barangays that are offering a livestream feed. Fortunately, Pacquiao’s fans in the calamity-hit city of Tacloban do not need to spend money to watch him fight Rios in the ring. A city official had said the Rios vs. Pacquiao bout will be shown in some public venues. Earlier, the Filipino boxing icon said he dedicates the fight to victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda that pummeled the city and other areas in Visayas recently. As of Friday morning, local officials reportedly decided on an area near city hall as one of the public showing venues. Also, a radio report said the airport lobby has been considered as a location where widescreen television sets will be mounted for the Pacquiao vs Rios live stream video.

Manny Pacquiao Vs. Brandon Rios: Start Time, PPV Details, And Tale Of The Tape

Six and a half months after the fight was announced, Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios are finally set to face off in Macau, China. It’s the first time Pac-Man will step inside the ring in almost a year. Rios last fought at the end of March.

Both boxers are looking for redemption from their previous bouts. Pacquiao was at the top of the sport, along with Floyd Mayweather, until his controversial loss to Timothy Bradley in June 2012. In December, though, there was no question about the decision when he was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez in the sixth round. Rios suffered a landmark defeat in his career, as well, the last time he laced up his gloves. He was beaten by Mike Alvarado in a unanimous decision for his first ever loss.

The two will be fighting at a catchweight of 147 pounds. Pacquiao has never had a problems switching weight classes, winning a record eight titles in different divisions. Rios will be making the jump from 140 pounds.

It’s the third major Pay-Per-view fight in as many months. Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez set records in their September bout by generating $150 million from 2.2 million PPV buys. In October, there were 375,000 buys for the fight between Bradley-Marquez.

With Pacquiao on the fight card, PPV’s usually top one million buys. Four of his last five bouts have done so, with the exception of Pacquiao-Bradley, which only generated a disappointing 700,000 buys.

Saturday’s fight can be purchased on HBO PPV for $59.95 in standard definition and $69.95 in HD. Viewers also have the option of watching Pacquiao vs. Rios with a live stream online through Top Rank TV.

The PPV itself is set to begin at 9 p.m. ET, but Pacquiao and Marquez won’t step inside the ring for a few hours. The first bell for their match will likely ring start sometime around 11 p.m. ET.

A victory is important for both fighters. Pacquiao hasn’t won in two years, and his trainer has suggested that a defeat would force him into early retirement. Rios is looking to bounce back from his first loss, and an upset over Pac-Man would give him a marquee victory on his resume.

However, the boxer who sees his hand raised early on Sunday morning could determine the opponent for one of the biggest matches of 2014. Floyd Mayweather has committed to fighting in May and September, but has yet to decide on his next opponent. A victory for Pacquiao could put him on Mayweather’s short list of potential challengers.

A Mayweather-Pacquiao fight has been talked about for years, but hit several roadblocks. Now, Pacquiao’s camp has said they want to make the mega-fight happen.

“There is no real impediment to having that fight happen whether it will or not depends completely on the Mayweather side,” Top Rank CEO Bob Arum recently told the media. “I can see it happening but I can’t predict that it will happen because it takes two to tango.”

In the past, issues over drug testing and a split of the purse have separated the two camps. While those problems seem to have been resolved, another impediment seems to be holding up a potential fight. Mayweather has a contract with Showtime, and Top Rank boxers, of which Pacquiao is one, fight on HBO. Arum, though, believes the situation can be worked ut.

“You’ve got to go back in history when Lennox Lewis, who fought for HBO, fought against Mike Tyson who was a Showtime fighter. Both networks participated in the promotion so that’s a road map of how we get this thing done,” he said.

If Pacquiao can’t get passed Rios, there’s no chance he’ll take on Mayweather. The undefeated boxer has already indicated that he doesn’t want to fight Pacquiao because of his two straight losses. Even if a defeat doesn’t put Pac-Man into retirement, he won’t get him a shot at the best the sport has to offer.

That leaves Rios, who isn’t likely to face Mayweather with a win, but it certainly would put him on the 36-year-old’s radar. Mayweather is under contract to fight four more times, so adding another big win to a defeat of Pacquiao could eventually get him in the ring with Mayweather.

Pacquiao vs. Rios: What to Watch for in Saturday’s Massive Fight

Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios have a little over a day left before they step into the ring Saturday night in Macau.  Pac-Man comes in as the heavy favorite, wanting to make everyone forget about that knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in December 2012. Rios is no slouch, though. He’s lost just one fight in his career and is seven years Pacquiao’s junior. Plus, all it takes is landing that one good punch, and it’s game over for Pac-Man.  Of course, surrounding the fight are plenty of questions and storylines, the answers of which could have a big impact on the immediate future for both fighters.

What to Watch for

Will Brandon Rios Pick Up an Historic Upset

There’s only one compelling storyline surrounding Rios, and it’s whether he can actually win. Many are simply looking at the 27-year-old as a stepping stone necessary for Pacquiao to move on to bigger and better things again.

Once Pac-Man knocks him out, Rios will go back to obscurity.

But if Rios wins, he will have a career transformation. Overnight, he can become a huge star and get at least one more big fight.

Even Buster Douglas got a huge bout with Evander Holyfield before everybody remembered that he wasn’t that good of a fighter to begin with, and his star quickly faded. Pacquiao is still at that point in his career where he’s looked at as a major star and one of the best pound-for-pound guys in the world. A win over him would result in a huge boost to one’s career. Really, though, whatever happens to Rios is merely serves as the backstory for Pacquiao’s narrative.

How Will Manny Pacquiao Look in the Ring?

You can cancel out that loss to Timothy Bradley, but you still have to admit that Pacquiao hasn’t been looking himself in the ring over the past couple of years. Over his career, he’s taken a ton of punishment, and as with any boxer, the years are starting to catch up with him. It isn’t a unique occurrence that a fighter who’s 34 years old isn’t the same as he was five or 10 years ago. With Pacquiao, you wonder how pronounced this decline is. Does he remain a great fighter, or are his days in the ring numbered?

In order to silence the critics, Pacquiao needs to win on Saturday and win in convincing fashion. He can’t let Rios hang around or, heaven forbid, get knocked to the canvas. A knockout would be the best result, but many would settle with a one-sided judges’ decision.

Will Manny Pacquiao Display Knockout Power?

In a four-fight stretch from June 2008 to September 2009, Pacquiao had three knockouts and forced a stoppage in the eight round against Oscar De La Hoya. It was during this stretch that the discussion about Pacquiao being one of the best fighters in the world really gained steam. He took out Ricky Hatton in the second round, felled Miguel Cotto in the 12th and took down David Diaz in the ninth. It was a dominant period which Pacquiao has yet to recreate. He hasn’t recorded a knockout since beating Cotto on Sept. 14, 2009. The question is, does Pac-Man still have knockout power?

So much of his success was based on his offensive prowess, as evidenced by his 38 knockouts in 54 matches. If he doesn’t have great power, can Pacquiao remain a world-class fighter?

How Much Will Superfight with Floyd Mayweather Be the Focus?

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Spor

Almost nothing Pacquiao does is viewed without considering what effect it would have on the prospective superfight between he and Floyd Mayweather Jr. You can bet that the announcers will draw parallels between Pacquiao vs. Rios to Mayweather’s win over Robert Guerrero back in May. Money looked great after spending a year out of the ring, so many expect Pac-Man to look just as good against a weak opponent following his knockout loss to Marquez. Should Pacquiao comfortably win, there will be plenty of talk as to when he could fight Mayweather. If Rios wins, then that could be the death knell for Pacquiao vs. Mayweather.

Pacquiao vs. Rios: Pac-Man Will End Drought by Stopping Bam Bam

In a fight that will go a long way towards determining how the rest of his career will play out, Manny Pacquiao will get his first victory in his last three bouts and his first stoppage since 2009.

This Saturday at the Cotai Arena in Macao, China, Pac-Man will take on Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios for the WBO international welterweight title.

Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO) is a worthy opponent. As his 23 knockouts attest, he has the power to send Pacquiao to his second straight knockout defeat. However, Rios’ penchant to look for the knockout is exactly the kind of opponent Pacquiao needed to face to get his career back on track.

In the below video, a blueprint for Rios to beat Pacquiao is laid out. Needless to say, I don’t think he’ll be able to follow it.

For the first time in his career, Pacquiao will enter this fight off of consecutive losses.

A third loss would likely be more than his career could withstand. In fact, his trainer Freddie Roach, is on record as saying that, should Pacquiao lose, retirement is a very real possibility.

The good news for Pacquiao fans, and boxing in general, is that Pacquiao is not going to lose. Not only will he not lose, but he will earn his first victory via a stoppage since 2009 when he beat Miguel Cotto with a 12th-round TKO.

Pacquiao won his four fights that followed his bout with Cotto, but the fearsome power that helped make him a legend was lacking. He was beginning to show signs of being a fighter whose skills were eroding, or simply wasn’t taking his craft as seriously as before.

Even though Pacquiao has come up on the losing end of his last two fights, the concerns that he has lost the drive or ability to be great have lessened.

Pacquiao lost to Timothy Bradley via a very controversial split decision. Following that fight, this happened:

The huge shot by Juan Manuel Marquez that knocked out Manny Pacquiao pic.twitter.com/p9amAblY

— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) December 9, 2012

It was shocking to see Pacquiao leveled, but after getting over the fact that he was knocked cold, it is possible to see that Pac-Man looked strong in the fight.

In fact, he looked faster and more powerful than he did in his last victory, which happened to be against Marquez and also came via a controversial decision (seriously, are there any other kind in boxing?).

Pacquiao won’t have to sweat out the judges holding his fate in this one.

What’s the outcome?

Pacquiao by KO. Pacquiao by decision. Rios by KO. Rios by decision. Submit Vote vote to see results

That knockout punch by Marquez? It came on a counterpunch, and Marquez is one of the all-time greats in this area. That fact is a big part of the reason that Pacquiao and JMM have had such classic bouts over the years.

The counterpunch is not going to be as big of a concern in this fight. Rios is a high-volume and active fighter. He has never displayed the patience or ability to wait for holes in an attack to exploit. He is going to try to outwork and out-brawl his opponent.

That is not the way to succeed against Pacquiao. Pacquiao is still loaded with power, and he knows how to brawl. He’s done it against many of the best fighters of this generation.

Rios, on the other hand, has yet to face a fighter with anywhere near the talent of Pacquiao. “Bam Bam” cannot be prepared for the power that Pacquiao is going to bring

I expect an exciting and fast-paced fight, but I don’t see this one going past five rounds. I look for Pacquiao to get his first knockdown within the first three rounds and end this fight in the fifth.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios: More Than Just a Battle from the Losers’ Bracket

COMMENTARY | Over the last several years, Manny Pacquiao has taken a lot of guff from some fans and media for fighting opponents coming off career-rattling losses. Of the Filipino icon’s last nine opponents, seven have come to fight him shortly after a major defeat. It’s an odd stat for an elite-level star and one that has served as a huge target for his detractors.

On November 23, in Macau, China, Pacquiao will be facing another opponent from the loser’s bracket, but the situation is much different this time.

Brandon Rios is no jaded, weary veteran pug, recently stripped of his career mojo by another elite fighter and he’s certainly no battered former champ staggering into a Pacquiao clash after a major whupping.

The 27-year-old “Bam Bam” is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Mike Alvarado in March, but it wasn’t the type of loss that should have any effect on a fighter like Rios. Actually, the Mexican-American brawler is such a gutsy, in your face character that it’s hard to imagine any loss deterring him from his seek and destroy ring style.

The loss to Alvarado was in a rematch of a brilliantly savage TKO 7 win just five months earlier. This time, though, Alvarado would avoid the toe-to-toe exchanges that led to his demise in their first fight and use lateral movement to negate the hard-charging Rios’ face-first style. Through twelve, Rios would win every minor battle, but ultimately lose the war to an opponent who opted to box rather than fight.

To Rios’ way of thinking, it was hardly a loss at all. He came to fight, Alvarado didn’t. What happened in March was more of a life lesson than anything else.

“The loss to Alvarado earlier this year was a blessing in disguise, because I lost the fight to the cards, a very close fight,” Rios said in an HBO blog published by RingTV.com. “On the other hand, I won something else. I won the experience, the experience to never be overconfident again. To always train for all scenarios, and that’s exactly what I am going to do.”

As for Pacquiao, if there’s a right way to handle an ugly knockout loss, Manny seems to have found it.

“It was an exciting fight and I have not lost any sleep over it or dwelled on it,” Pacquiao said in his own blog. “It’s the nature of the sport, and you have to accept it. I was fully prepared, and had put in my time in training camp. I didn’t cut any corners.

“To prepare for Brandon Rios, I began my training camp four weeks earlier than I normally do– 12 weeks total…It’s not so much what I have learned from the Bradley and Márquez fights that is preparing me for my battle with Rios, it’s what I have done in advance of my training camp for the Rios fight, and that is to rest…Taking the longest break of my professional career refreshed me physically and mentally.”

The gut feeling is that Pacquiao won’t be rattled by his most recent defeat or haunted into second guessing his warrior’s instinct. According to all reports, Manny is what he was prior to the Marquez about-except maybe even more determined to get a win this time.

Yes, Pacquiao and Rios are both coming off losses and boxing common sense says that it’s possible that one or both fighters could be tentative and/or plagued by self-doubt in their return to the ring. But, in this instance, considering the nature of the men involved, it’s more likely that these recent setbacks will just make both fighters more determined to leave Macau with a win.

This is good news for fight fans.

Pacquiao vs. Rios weigh-in results: Manny at 145, Rios at 146.5

Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios both made weight for their welterweight title fight. Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios made it official for their bout tomorrow night on HBO pay-per-view. The two men stepped on the scales in Macau and both came in under the welterweight limit. Rios actually ended up as the bigger — or at least heavier — man, coming in at 146.5 despite never fighting above light welterweight while Manny, the “proven” welter came in at 145. Despite both men losing their last fight, the WBO invented a new title for the two men to fight over. One of the big questions heading in is how Rios will be able to take his power and chin up to welterweight but he looked solid on the scales, far less drawn out than he has on multiple occasions trying to make lightweight. Pacquiao was his usual ripped self, looking comfortable fighting at “home” (home, in this case, being Asia). The two get it on tomorrow night with a pay-per-view that starts at 9 p.m. ET with three fights before the main event which should kick off around midnight.

Where: Venetian Resort. Macau, China.

When: Nov. 22, 2013. 6:30 p.m. ET

One of the highly-anticipated sports events of 2013, the Pacquiao vs Rios match will take place at the said resort hotel’s Cotai Arena. Rios versus Pacquiao is an HBO pay-per-view event but, just like other major boxing matches, its slightly delayed ad-sponsored broadcast or video replay will also be offered on some television stations and cable channels.
